Beyond the Labels
Catch 22 Barossa Valley blend is a Shiraz-rich combo from Australia’s favourite region for the grape, and theres Gold-winning McLaren Vale Shiraz from the celebrated Angove family, who own some of the region’s oldest vines. Meet the good Doctor Durif, a new arrival to our cellars, and a smooth and utterly charming star with a dark side. Then there's a Trophy and Double Gold-winning blend of Durif and Shiraz, Dark Corner, and the popular Long Live the King Cabernet Sauvignon from the 5-star rated estate of Order of Australia recipient Bill Calabria. Lastly, Double Gold The Old Red River Gum is a moreish Cab Shiraz blend with a habit of winning Gold – and better.
Courtesy of our good friends, the Marauding Vintners, who know exactly where to find the best wines and genuine characters – meet Doctor Durif. The back label tells her story. Unable to settle in her native France, the good doctor has found climates much more to her liking in California and in spots across South and South Eastern Australia. A smooth operator, mostly seen alone (at times using a pseudonym), she actually mixes easily. Her easy charm can mask her dark side, complexity and genuine depth, but given her frequent extremepopularity it’s odd she’s not more widely known. Dark, deep, a bit spicy and an infectious easy charm. We think you're going to love her.
It’s wine like this, made using fruit from premium sites throughout the region, that makes South Australia a first choice destination for lovers of big, generous and velvety Aussie reds – consider it the state’s great gift to the wine world, not just at home but all over the globe. The Old Red River Gum Cabernet Shiraz flows with distinctive black fruit, eucalypt and spice, smoothed out by delicious dark chocolate and a touch of smoky oak.
As you’d expect from a wine dominated by Durif, this is a whopper of a red. It was carefully crafted in the darkest corner of the cellar. Why? Because it’s the special project of rising star winemaker David Joeky and he didn’t want anyone to take a look or taste it until he was absolutely ready. So every evening, after the rest of the crew had left, David would retire to the furthest corner of the cellar, where he’d stationed his special tanks of dark, spicy Durif and ripest, peppery Shiraz. We think he’s ‘blended a blinder’ as the locals say. "Nose of blackcurrant, juicy black cherry, smoky chocolate undertones. Luscious fruit on the palate ... and mouthwatering freshness. A seductive Shiraz with a mellow texture. Delicious and structured" (Gilbert & Gaillard).
The Italian families of the Riverina have been producing royally good wines for years and now the secret is out! In critic James Halliday’s words... Calabria Family Wines “consistently delivers exceptional value for money across the entire range”. Bill Calabria, the leading light behind this wine, received a Queen’s Birthday Honour for his services to charity and the wine industry as a whole. Indulge in his classy Gold-winning Coonawarra (and Riverina) Cabernet Sauvignon. Lovely intensity of rich fruit with layers of blackcurrant and herb flavours and spicy toasty oak notes. The tannins are firm, the finish smooth, long and powerful.
So what's the Catch 22? You can't be a winemaker until you get experience, but you can't get experience until you make wine! Catch 22 is a winery owned and run by an established and highly acclaimed winemaker who teaches fledgling winemakers how to make quality wines. This is a succulent blend full of luscious dark fruit, with a hint of spice, eucalypt and smooth tannins.
