Generously rich Aussie Shiraz is well represented in this impressive collection of full-flavoured reds. Greg Follett from the celebrated family-owned Lake Breeze estate also crafts the Riverscape Estate reds. His knowledge of the local Langhorne Creek vineyards is second to none, and this is a treat. Margaret River-based winery Moss Brothers crafts “delicious wines from the best regional parcels from across the jewels of our West Australian wine domains”. This straight Shiraz is a new arrival in our cellars and sure, we feel, to go down well. There’s a dynamic duo of Shiraz blends – with the rare Petit Verdot grape in popular Boscwood, and with Cabernet Sauvignon in Quarter Horse. A visit from the 16 Little Black Pigs is always welcome and you’ll love the straight Cabernet Sauvignon here from South Australia, delicious with a steak.
Lastly relish the black-fruited bestselling Black Duck Durif – sure to ward off chills! Save $40 with 6 lavish reds at $15.99 a bottle.
Quarter Horse is a classic Aussie blend of ripe, curranty Cabernet and spicy liquorice Shiraz, well ripened in Victorian vineyards. It's the work of winemaker Andrew Byers, a talented guy who first thought he'd become a professional golf player, but decided after a stretch of work experience at the famous Villa Maria winery, that his talents lay in wine. This is rich, ripe red – supple and fruity enough to enjoy on its own, but spot on, too, with marinated lamb shanks or some melt in the mouth pulled pork.
You don’t often see intensely dark Petit Verdot combined with spicy rich Shiraz. Partly because there's not much grown in Australia! It's native to Bordeaux, where it adds generous tannins and inky depth to French reds. In Australia's heat, however, those tannins are tamed and it brings peppery notes and dense fruit to the party. Add in Shiraz's characteristic bramble fruit, with a rich helping of smoky spice, and the result is this tasty red. It's from a 60-year-old winery that's family-run from top to toe. With the largest plantings of Petit Verdot in Australia, they know how to make the grape shine. For this vintage they use small, top-quality parcels from select vineyards. Deliciously dark, it's a red to be enjoyed with grilled meats or veggie stews.
If you love the big rich wines from bestselling The Black Pig label, then don't miss their latest 16 Little Black Pigs offering – a luscious South Australian Cabernet showing all the intensity that you know and love. Last year's vintage won Gold in France and we expect great things from the 2022. Get ready for billowing black fruit, cedary oak and grippy tannins on a long, intense finish. It's waiting for sizzling barbecue.
Sam Trimboli LOVES Durif. He calls it a “stunning little powerhouse grape that develops astounding complexity”. The numberplate on his car even sports the word ‘Durif’, that’s how highly he rates it. The grapes for this wine come from a small vineyard that Sam helped establish in the 1980s and is now at peak maturity. It’s a big, rich, barrel-aged red that will definitely impress - as the two Gold medals attest.
This smooth, beautifully refined Shiraz is from the red soils of Langhorne Creek and a vineyard first planted by the great, great, great grandfather of winemaker Greg Follett. Tiny volumes made. Dark ruby colour with aromas of blackberries, allspice and clove which continue on to the palate. It’s soft enough to drink solo or complements rich osso bucco perfectly.
The Moss Brothers name has been a hallmark of high quality Margaret River wines for over 30 years ... one taste of this rich and fragrant beauty will show you why! It shows all the distinctive Margaret River intensity, finesse, fragrance and flavour on a long, smooth palate. Delicious!
