15 Jumbo Mystery Reds

Launched 20 years ago, Il Papavero is our most reordered Italian red. Customers love the easy-going, ripe cherry fruit and its suave Italian style. Blended from the best grapes of the vintage, it offers supple, ripe fruit and easy charm.

Il Papavero has been a chart-topping favourite for years; the silken Italian charmer with incomparable versatility. A wine for all seasons, it’s a great party red with or without food and partners the universe of pasta and pizza dishes effortlessly. As wine critic Richard Neill once wrote, "If all table wines tasted this good, no one would leave the table"! The value too is second to none. The secret? Papavero maestro Scipione Giuliani, a 5th-generation winemaker. Every vintage he selects the ripest, most flavoursome grapes from the top-performing regions to ensure Il Papavero is always supple with red berry fruit. Sangiovese from the Marches, Abruzzi Montepulciano, plus Negroamaro and Nero d’Avola from the south – a perfect combination.

Pure, vibrant flavours ensure Chilean Merlot wide international appeal. And one of the country’s leading producers is the Luis Felipe Edwards estate, four time winner of ‘Chilean Winery of the Year’. Their Merlot is full of fruit and velvet smooth.

This plump, juicy-fruit Merlot is made by Trophy-winning winemaker Nicolas Bizzarri. He heads the cellar team at the leading, family-owned Luis Felipe Edwards estate in the premium Colchagua Valley. Luis Felipe Edwards Snr started his wine estate in 1976, beginning with a small plot of land and slowly buying up more vineyards. Today he owns an entire valley and a thoroughly modern, fully equipped cellar. He really has spared no expense over the years (even installing chandeliers in the barrel cellar), but has always kept that quality-focused, family-run touch to the business. His reds are renowned for both great flavour and value and have won many top international awards. Tasty as a glass solo, this Merlot is very versatile with food too.

Don Cayetano Merlot

Here it is - the new vintage of the mighty Black Pig McLaren Vale Shiraz and it already has a Gold (like the last few vintages!)  It's "corker of a porker" as one of our customers has memorably named it!

The pig is on a roll! Recent vintages (the past four included) have all won at least one Gold - one even snagged a Trophy! This 2024 has maintained the tradition and picked up a Gold already. Once upon a time there was a brilliant, acclaimed McLaren Vale winemaker, (who chooses to remain nameless) who also kept pigs. A big black pig called Tanuki was his first.  He loved Tanuki so much he named a delicious, brand new Shiraz in his honour and we all quickly found that customers and show judges loved The Black Pig as much as he did.’  Tanuki’s descendants still roam the winemaker’s paddocks today, while The Black Pig Shiraz has remained a constant bestseller ever since. Produced from hand-selected fruit from top McLaren Vale vineyards, The Black Pig Shiraz leaps from the glass with sumptuous, rich and ripe blackcurrant tones and vanilla snippets. Oozing lashings of cedar, ripe berries and hints of chocolate this stunning Shiraz is the kind of wine that can drink now with ease, or be laid down for another 6 or so years. Always a fan favourite, this vintage has already impressed with a Gold medal. Shiraz drinking perfection.

The Black Pig McLaren Vale Shiraz

Fragrant cassis, ripe plum with hints of mint and subtle cedar oak, followed by rich black fruit, sweet plum and fine grain tannins across the palate. A soft, generous multi Gold-winning Cabernet ideal with duck or rabbit.

After enjoying a “distinguished career as a winemaker spanning over 20 years, working for some of Australia’s largest wineries” (Halliday), John Quarisa is making his own wines – his own way. The result? Mile upon mile of excellent wines! Fragrant cassis, ripe plum with hints of mint and subtle cedar oak aromas, followed by rich black fruit, sweet plum and fine grain tannins across the palate. A soft, generous, multiple Gold-winning Cabernet which John advises pairs perfectly with duck or rabbit. This wine has the flavour, structure and balance to be enjoyed now or offers added satisfaction from further cellaring.
