Walker Bell’s High-scoring Reds Dozen Case contents
Peter Lehmann was known as the ‘Baron of the Barossa’, was a member of the Order of Australia, was called "a legend in his own lifetime” (Halliday) and “the most famous man in the Australian wine business” (Matthew Jukes). Barossa Cabernet is lavishly dark and mouthfilling ... as you’ll see when you taste this lavish example. Classic, inky black colour with generous lashings of rich dark blackcurrant, forest fruits, chocolate with eucalypt mint and spice undertones.
The Marauding Vintners travel the regions, coaxing and cajoling the makers of prime wine to send it their way. As their friends, we reap the benefits in the form of top drops like this. Now you can too! The Captain is a lush Langhorne Creek Cabernet that displays lifted aromas of blackberry, juicy plum and spice. The palate has a delicious fruit richness with luscious complexity. As the back label proudly tells you the Captain is “A dashing presence of noble birth, well travelled, able to mix in all companies but happy to stand proudly alone. Broad-shouldered and smooth, he’ll add a combination of class and excitement, but when the chips are on the table, he’ll never let you down…” This is one smooth operator!
From Kilikanoon’s Clare Valley heartland – this cuvée makes use of fruit from several ‘Settlement’ blocks in Leasingham originally given to soldiers returning from the World Wars. Warm days and cool nights yield Shiraz of terrific power, elegance and length. The use of multiple blocks and careful oak ageing, adds complexity for a rich, satisfying premium Kilikanoon Shiraz full of black fruit and peppery notes.
Once your wine arrives, slow right down. Be patient with this wine and it will reward your handsomely – decant for half an hour and the transformation is magical. Once the juice loosens up and releases its hidden depths, it develops an aroma that is just divine. Discover liquorice, blackcurrant, cherry, blackberry and bitter cocoa mirrored on the palate with turbo-charged punch and power. And the finish? It goes on forever…
They said he was ‘aluado’ (‘moon-mad’) but José Neiva Correia has proven his doubters wrong. Inky black Alicante Bouschet is usually found in Portuguese red blends, there to add deep colour and black fruit flavours. Rarely, if ever, is it seen on its own. That didn’t deter José - a talented winemaker, credited by wine journo Tim Atkin as the man behind Portugal’s wine revolution. José saw potential in this dark Portuguese star and his conviction has paid off. Aluado is now one of our customers’ favourite reds. Winning Gold medals almost every vintage, Jose makes the wine at his family estate, Quinta de Porto Franco, just north of Lisbon. Expect ripe damson and blackberry, mocha, exotic spice, and a lovely freshness of flavour. A rich, velvety red, great solo or with grilled meats and stews.
It’s no coincidence the Papavero family of wines are amongst our customers’ favourites – winemaker Scipione Giuliani always manages to capture the very essence of the grape, the spirit of Italy and a delicious drinkability. This is the granddaddy of the group, made purely from Primitivo from a plot of 50-year-old vines, resulting in very concentrated flavour. Scipione discovered the vines in Puglia, and insisted that the grapes be bottled solo. To match the richness of the fruit he aged the wine in barrel for a few months, lending it mellow roundness and complexity. Dark plum and spicy raisin with alluring chocolate hints. ll Papavero Primitivo is a weighty red, best served with similarly hearty food. Enjoy with spaghetti with tomato, garlic and basil sauce, or with roast meats or pork casserole.
