Beyond the Labels
Here is a trio of Italian whites that will carry you right through the night. This tantalising trio would make a great gift, but that's not stopping you from buying yourself some too!
Pinot Grigio is one of the most popular white wine styles in our cellars, loved for its refreshing, delicate flavours. And some of the best examples can be found in Italy. Specifically, the high altitude Adige Valley. Here, the cooler climate delivers whites with pristine, citrusy fruit. Wines like this latest vintage of Sentiero dei Pini, crafted by local expert Giuseppe Secchi. It's named after a famous local vineyard – on a cone shaped hill that was once home to a Roman temple, approached by a spiralling path lined with pine trees. Truly thirst quenching, this wine displays crisp lemon and green apple flavours, with a sophisticated, minerally edge. It’s a 'drink anytime' wine, but perhaps best enjoyed with antipasti and fresh seafood.
Add extra sparkle to your weekly wine routine with this fresh, inviting Prosecco. It's full of delicious apple and lemon scented flavour. After all, right across Italy Prosecco is the bubbly of choice and as much a part of daily life as a gelato or an espresso. This wine is from northern Italian native Alessandro Gallici. He knows every grape grower worth knowing, every premium vineyard, and has spent his life making outstanding wines. Softly spoken but passionate, he was for years president of a prestigious winery but has now started his own business, focusing on a range of bespoke wines bearing his own name. Our latest shipment is beautifully fresh. Serve chilled as an aperitivo any time, or add fresh peach juice for an authentic Bellini.
Italy’s deep south is best known for big, smoky wines made from its prized local varieties – Primitivo, Negroamaro, and in this case the uniquely Puglian Susumaniello grape. In local dialect Susumaniello means something like “loaded like a donkey”, referring to the wine’s massive amounts of aroma and flavour. Pillastro’s creator Angelo Maci is a leading figure in Puglia’s recent quality revolution, and is fervently proud of local traditions and rare grape varieties. As fans of southern Italian wines – and Pillastro fans in particular – will agree, Puglia offers “undreamed-of character and potential” (Hugh Johnson), and mouthwatering Susumaniello is the supreme example of this. Serve in large glasses with braised lamb shanks or caponata.
