You might need sunglasses this winter with all these dazzling Gold-medal reds and whites! From the lemon, stony freshness of France's Les Belons to a big South Australian in Quarisa's Enchanted Tree Cabernet. There's quite the range!
Think of this as a gorgeous tropical field blend, it has the body of Sav Blanc, the beautiful acid line of Riesling, the exotic fruit flavour of Semillon and Verdelho, and the lifted aromatics of Viognier. Everything came together in perfect balance and we honestly think its stunning. Elegant and refreshing with beautiful aromas of stone fruit, lifted peach, zesty pineapple and delicate citrus notes. Crisp and fresh mandarin jumps from the palate followed by pithy lemon. A zingy finish with lingering acidity.
When winemakers along the French coast finish a day hefting fruit under the late summer sun, they flock to one of the many oyster shacks dotted along the beaches. Only two things are sold here: oysters and a single wine. (They’re not classed as restaurants, so by law they can only offer one.) Of course, to satisfy thirsty winemakers it has to be the freshest, liveliest white. It was in one of these shacks in the Cap Ferret, just an hour and a half west of Bordeaux, that our talented buyer, Jean-Marc, was inspired to seek out Les Belons. It’s lovely ripe Sauvignon Blanc with a dash of the local hero Gros Manseng. This portion adds apricot and peach notes to the bright stony lemon flavour. A super tasty aperitif any time of the year.
Wine Spectator calls Portugal “the most exciting wine place on the planet”, with its terrific range of native grape varieties and wines that always offer standout value. The rich, mouthfilling Lobo e Falcão fits firmly in that category. It’s made at a 17th century estate owned by the Lobo de Vasconcelos family, once the location of the king’s falconry. Special barrels of wine were kept for the king when he visited. Today, talented winemaker Joana Lopes makes this red specially for us, blending Syrah with Portugal’s exciting native grapes. Previously awarded a Wine Enthusiast Best Buy Award, the 2020 has lovely intensity of flavour due to another dry year. Generous wild berry fruit and spice with a velvet texture – a very moreish red.
THREE Gold for this juicy and rich Cabernet? Why aren't we surprised? It comes from the great John Quarisa who has magic knack for creating luscious, mouthfilling reds that you want to keep on sipping. The show judges clearly find it irresistible as well. Juicy and rich, with delicious dark plum, blackcurrant, blackberry, and subtle eucalypt. The tannins are fine and smooth.
This brilliantly zippy, fabulously fresh white is made only from grapes grown in high altitude vineyards in the foothills of the Pyrenees. The little rain and dizzying heights found here result in wines full of intense, crisp fruit flavour and lifted herbal aromas. In Navarra, the pure sunshine and clear nights deliver wines that sing with freshness. Lemon crisp with lifted herbal and floral aromas. Enjoy lightly chilled.
Moonlighters captures the very essence of the RedHeads concept. Right at the beginning, when RedHeads started in the McLaren Vale, a handful of dedicated, rule-breaking, young winemakers, with a day job at the big corporations, would arrive at RedHeads studio early evening, down a cold beer, then start on crafting a ‘real’ wine, with all the unbridled passion you’d expect from the newly qualified winemaking elite 'Down Under'. The RedHeads Moonlighters White is a beautiful blend of rich Chardonnay and aromatic Viognier, with a full nose featuring struck match characters and summer stone fruit. The textured palate hints at apricot nectar, spice and subtle nutty notes, balanced by a mouthwatering acidity.
