La Fonte d'Oro's built up quite a fan club since it first arrived in 2008. It's a velvet smooth red packed with black fruit flavour thanks to some brilliantly creative winemaking, courtesy of the fabulously talented Simone Cortese. He knew that by drying the finest Negroamaro and Primitivo grapes, two Puglian varieties that ooze dense, ripe fruit character, he’d concentrate their flavours even more. Of course this is a costly way to make wine, but the results are impressive. After two weeks’ drying, the grapes are pressed, extracting super rich, flavourpacked juice. Six months ageing in oak adds layers of vanilla and spice to the wine's dark, ripe fruit. Decant and serve with a rich stew.
Mark Richardson, red specialist at Tyrrell’s calls Heathcote “undoubtedly Australia’s most exciting new red wine producing region.” Buying up vineyards here was the brainchild of Bruce Tyrrell – and it has yielded a red that wins huge numbers of loyal fans every year. The secrets of Heathcote lie in the unique strip of Cambrian soil, forged over 500 million years - resulting in rich dark berry fruit and trademark white pepper spice for which the region is famous.
Crafted by ex-Penfolds Chief Red Winemaker Mark Farmilo, the man who once made Penfolds Grange and won the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy twice. Juicy and smooth with rich red fruit and vanillin qualities, dusty tannins and savoury leather characteristics that remind why Tempranillo is so good!
Bordeaux is where our whole wine merchant story began, five decades ago. As you would expect we’ve plenty of friends in the region, not least the superb viticulturalist Ludovic Roussillon. His Château Le Coin lies just across the river from our exclusive cellar and winemaking studio, Le Chai au Quai. The soils on Ludovic’s Entre Deux Mers estate are rich in limestone and quick draining, which concentrates the rich flavours of the grapes. Ludovic is great to work with and very generous – he even lets our own Bordeaux specialist Jean-Marc Sauboua cherry pick the best vats and supervise the finishing of the wine. Made mostly from prime Merlot, this classy Bordeaux, with many Golds to its name, is perfect with roast shoulder of lamb or venison.
