Beyond the Labels
Chardonnay is so versatile and able to grow almost anywhere. Taste across Chardonnay from regions like Adelaide Hills and (lesser known) Currency Creek in Australia, plus Mendoza in Argentina.
"… fruit-forward, with some tropical notes of pineapple and melon alongside the juicy grapefruit, mandarin and lemon peel. Good for these late summer evenings – pair with chicken and pork dishes. 91pts"David Walker-Bell, Wine Folio.
If you love Chardonnay, then don't miss this beautiful drop from Ocelli in South Australia's beautiful Adelaide Hills. 2021 was a mild year with ideal growing conditions, allowing the vignerons to harvest fruit at perfect ripeness and balance. The vintage's whites demonstrate excellent varietal flavour with a degree of finesse, the Ocelli Chardonnay included. Delicately aromatic on the nose while richly layered on the palate. A flurry of stone fruits like peach and nectarine, green apple, citrus and nutty, toasty vanilla qualities thanks to the French oak. Delicious!
Take a deep breath and smell the fresh aromas of citrus, peach and tropical fruit. Sip and savour the long and flavoursome palate of citrus and peach, subtle oak and deliciously crisp smooth finish. A portion of the wine was fermented in French oak and left for 6 months until blending and bottling, resulting in subtle textural hints and spice. Named after Quarisa family's private waterhole, the 30 Mile Chardonnay is as refreshing as a midnight swim. Try it alongside pan-fried fish with ginger and spring onion.
The story of Chalk Hill starts in 1839 when John Harvey arrived in Adelaide, which was then a three-year-old colony of just 6,000 people. Today, Chalk Hill has five vineyards across McLaren Vale, including the Chalk Hill vineyard that was planted in 1969. They also have strong relationships with growers throughout South Australia, like the wonderful family who produced the fruit for this fine Padthaway Chardonnay. Hand-picked, the grapes were gently pressed off skins prior to fermentation, then transferred to smaller French oak barrels, of which 10% were new and the rest were second and third use. This wine shows flavours of stone fruit and melon, with citrus flowers and hazelnut notes. A long fine finish is well balanced. Enjoy with smoked chicken salad with camembert, hazelnuts and citrus glaze.
