It was an ancestor of Dr Richard Hamilton’s, a man by the very same name, who planted the first vines on the Adelaide Plains back in 1837. Over a century later, Dr Hamilton established his own winery in McLaren Vale, which includes the vineyards started by his father and uncle. Some of their vines are over 125 years old! A deliciously smooth and silky GSM from the great Richard Hamilton estate. Fruit comes from the Hamilton family’s Farm Block, while the individual varieties, Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre were fermented separately and aged in seasoned oak to retain fruit dominance. Full red with youthful crimson hues. Subtle use of oak allows the fruit to shine through to reveal attractive hints of boiled fruit cake with cinnamon and cloves this wine will accompany the best pasta, paella, or rich gamey meals – or just enjoy it on its own.
Richard Hamilton Wines are reflective of the distinctive McLaren Vale region with its Mediterranean climate producing great value, fruit driven wines. Lot 148 commemorates the first allotment of land that the Hamilton ancestors acquired when first arriving in South Australia in 1837. Today Lot 148 Merlot has become an excellent example of the variety from McLaren Vale. It's rich, chocolatey and velvety on a long, smooth finish.
