The Wine
Angove have a great reputation for quality and value, and considerable heritage, too. Their story began with the arrival from Cornwall of Dr William Angove in 1886. As a hobby, he planted vines in Tea Tree Gully, near Adelaide, made wine and even mastered distillation (Angove still makes Australia's best known brandy). The business really took off after his eldest son, 'Skipper', studied winemaking at Roseworthy, and it's now run by the fourth generation. Petit Verdot is a classic Bordeaux grape, grown by only a few top properties on its home turf, where it's used to add depth and colour to wines. Not surprisingly, then, the pure version from sunny Australia is truly voluptuous. Be sure to decant in advance and enjoy with steak or lasagne.
