It’s a region where volumes are strictly protected, and in this excellent 2022 vintage, too much beautiful, ripe Sangiovese fruit was harvested. So some was ‘declassified’ – marked for release as standard Chianti. The wine though, crafted by two local legends, is anything but standard. Tuscany’s Franco Bernabei has earned the nickname ‘Mister Sangiovese’, having helped produce some of the region’s priciest Super Tuscan releases. With his son Matteo he has here created an opulent, aromatic, expressive and elegant Italian classic.
