For 30 years or so, the abundant spicy raspberry, deep damson fruit and plush texture has won BIG velvety, fruit-rich El Bombero from sun-baked Cariñena legendary status among many devoted fans. From its very first appearance it won Golds galore, and its rich medal history includes four Golds in the past four vintages – including for this fabulous 2025.

It comes from Cariñena. It’s hot and arid here. The sun beats down relentlessly like an iron bar and sun-loving grapes like Garnacha (Grenache) achieve amazing ripeness. The heat is important – the name Bombero means firefighter in Spanish. Ancient vines, hot summers and a lack of rain mean fewer grapes, which in turn means superb flavour intensity.

Local legend Javier Domecque (winemaker, amateur bull fighter and ardent troubadour) has been the man behind Bombero, but he retired last year, and today it’s winemaker Jesús Prieto, who ensures El Bombero remains packed with spicy, generous black fruit power. It’s great for barbecues, casseroles, pasta dishes or a plate of good old sausage and mash. This original BIG Red is today’s Prince, and you can enjoy 9 bottles of it.

Javier did however make our King for today. El Bombero Gran Reserva 2020 is a premium edition of Bombero. A sophisticated, oak-aged, dark red made only in best vintages using the pick of the crop from the oldest vines – Garnacha again, with a generous portion of juicy Tempranillo adding elegant complexity. It too is no stranger to show success with six Golds in the past eight vintages.

To qualify for Gran Reserva status, the wine is aged in oak for three years with further time in bottle prior to release. So now, six years on, it’s silky smooth, packed with rich berries and spicy complexity, ideal with roast lamb and game. And you’ll enjoy three beautiful bottles.
