Shelves looking bare? These hero reds are riding to your rescue – and as they’re bringing plenty with then in terms of flavour, value and character you’ll find them well deserving of the name. Have to say, to stock up with reds this good for $15.99 a bottle, with a saving of $132, is pretty magnificent to start with, but let’s take a quick run through the stars – from four winemaking countries. There’s Spain’s Gold medal Gran Selección sensation, Palacio del Conde – a terrific Tempranillo from Valencia. Velvety, fruit-filled black red Amoras from one of Portugal’s most awarded estates brings together four cracking local grape varieties, and talking awarded estates, there’s sumptuous Don Cayetano Merlot from Chile’s Four-time ‘Winery of the Year’ Luis Felipe Edwards. Fire & Foal is a lush Gold-winning Cabernet Sauvignon from Robertson, one of South Africa’s best winemaking region – hot, sunny but cooled regularly by ocean breezes. It’s a freshly landed star! There’s superb Cabernet from Australia too in McLaren Vale’s mighty, 92pt Blackstrap and 93pt favourite, Long Live the King, which takes its fruit from prime vineyards in Langhorne Creek and Coonawarra. Last, but by no means least, is John Quarisa’s Gold and Double Gold-winning Shiraz Cab combo, The Great Bonza, which never fails to live up to its name.
