The Wine

A Gold-medal, 92pt seamless blend of Cabernet and Shiraz, in what has become a definitive Aussie blend. David Walker-Bell writing in WineFolio, calls it: Sam Kim, Wine Orbit is another fan, finding it: “Brightly fruited and fragrant…” with a “succulent palate… polished tannins. Delightfully styled and expressed… friendly and very drinkable.”

The Pike brothers established Pikes winery in the Polish Hill sub-region of the Clare Valley in 1984, renovating an old stone shearing shed to house their winery and cellar door. Neil (now retired after over 38 vintages in Clare) was the veteran winemaker, Andrew the seasoned viticulturist (he spent 22 years working for big names like Wynn’s Coonawarra and Southcorp before establishing Pikes in the 1980s with wife Cathy, and his brother). The Pikes family has been making beer and soft drinks since 1878 when Henry Pike arrived in Australia from Dorset, England. Today, Pike’s top releases, among them the Merle Riesling (RRP $62) and EWP Shiraz (RRP $75) – both named after Andrew and Neil’s parents, regularly receive impressive scores of 95 points and higher!

Pikes remains a hugely popular destination and brand, winning the Halliday Wine Companion’s People's Choice Award in both 2022 and 2023. Together they turn out formidable wines.

Their richly textured 2021 'Wilfred's Block' really is magnificent. Inky, slatey Cabernet and sumptuous, spicy Shiraz, it’s a contemplative wine – the layers of flavour will reveal themselves slowly – and perfect for winter sipping. It will cellar well until 2029, but is drinking beautifully now. Decant, pour into big glasses, and savour with good food and good friends.
