92pt, old-vine Langhorne Creek Cabernet Merlot blend from the outstanding Lake Breeze.

While you’re enjoying this wine, spare a thought for the vineyard workers who once danced amongst the vines avoiding the menacing bull ants who resided there. Their reward is this top drop - a lifted bouquet of blackberries with a touch of mocha. The ageing in oak for 15 months has enhanced the mouth-feel of this wine, which is rich and smooth, and offers a lovely soft finish with polished tannins. It's from Lake Breeze, Halliday Wine Companion's 'Best Value Winery of the Year 2022'. They also dominate year after year at the Langhorne Creek Wine Show as the Gold medal will attest.

Leconfield McLaren Vale Shiraz is the sibling to their classic Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, for which the estate is famous. Bright, vibrant nose showing red plum and olive nuances overlayed with subtle oak that provides an element of coffee mocha. Ripe Shiraz palate with fine tannins and persistent length of flavour. Round acidity provides refreshing elegance. "Very intense purple-red colour with rich dark chocolate and dried-herb aromas overlying ripe dark-berry fruits, the palate very full-bodied and rich, strong and concentrated black-plum flavours eventually dominating. The Pike brothers established Pikes winery in the Polish Hill sub-region of the Clare Valley in 1984, renovating an old stone shearing shed to house their winery and cellar door. Neil is the veteran winemaker (he’s done over 38 vintages in Clare); Andrew the seasoned viticulturist (he spent 22 years working for big names like Wynn’s Coonawarra and Southcorp before establishing Pikes). Together they turn out formidable wines that earn plenty of show medals and critical acclaim. Their richly textured 2021 'Wilfred's Block' really is magnificent. A definitive Australian blend of inky, slatey Cabernet and sumptuous, spicy Shiraz, it’s a contemplative wine – the layers of flavour will reveal themselves slowly – and perfect for winter sipping. It will cellar well until 2029, but is drinking beautifully now. Decant, pour into big glasses, and savour with good food and good friends.

Moulin du Prieur is from Ludovic Roussillon, the winemaker behind the generous ripe fruit and velvety tannins of Château Le Coin. Here you’ll find the same appealing style, especially in the ripe 2022 vintage. Generous creamy plum and spice notes.

Ludovic Roussillon is one of the top viticulteurs in Bordeaux’s Entre-Deux-Mers. He knows how to coax the very best out of his soils to get the most flavour in his grapes. Work hard in the vineyard and the wine almost makes itself, he says. We’ve worked with Ludovic for a number of years, enjoying both his red and his white from Château Le Coin. This is another Gold medal wine from his vineyards – mostly Merlot, with a little Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon – all vinified to bring out the fruit richness, supported by sleek tannins. Rethink Bordeaux with this supple, generously fruity, rounded red. It’s already drinking really well, with or without food. Roast beef, full flavoured pasta dishes, charcuterie, cheese – a very versatile Gold medallist.

Pure Syrah is rarely found solo in the wines of the Languedoc-Roussillon; it's usually reserved for the pricy reds of the northern Rhône. From a small family domaine and vineyards close to Corbières, this has dark, smoky black fruit and spice.

In the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France, pure Syrah is rare, unlike in the much famed, pricy reds of the northern Rhône. Our scout and buyer for the Languedoc-Roussillon is Mark Hoddy. He's always searching the region's vineyards, to check out the vintage and the finest parcels of grapes. This is an ace find Mark discovered first in 2019 via an old friend in Corbières. Close by is Domaine La Lirande, a small estate founded in 1912 by the grandfather, François, in the tiny village of Coulobres. Every year, the Syrah from the domaine's 8 hectares of 40-year-old vines stands out for quality, especially in 2022 which, despite both spring frosts and summer hail, has produced exceptional wines. Just taste the richness of this seductive red. Ripe black fruit with smoky liquorice and wild herb notes, it's still young, so open early and decant. Great at a barbecue.

A luscious old-vine, small-batch Grenache. Dry grown bush vines come together to create a wine which is aromatic and lifted on the nose with a beautifully layered, textural palate with wild strawberry and spice.

From a new wave of excellent winemakers focused on elevating the virtues of this vastly under-rated variety. Sourced from a number of old vineyards in Australia's Riverland and McLaren Vale regions, some of which are dry grown bush vines. Wild ferments, whole bunch inclusion, larger oak and no filtration or fining define the natural character of the wine. Full-bodied, rich and smooth with a hint of oak

Jaime Quendera, our favourite Portuguese winemaker, has made a juicy, fruit-forward red, aged in a very special cask. Enjoy Alicante Bouschet’s smooth texture in this red from rare, ancient vines that oozes rich flavours of black cherry and pepper.

Can you imagine buying 1,008 bottles of wine in one year? That’s 200 gallons to be exact – the same amount that each American household was allowed to make for ‘personal use’ during Prohibition. And the go-to grape during this DIY time wasn’t Cabernet or Merlot, it was the bold and juicy Alicante Bouschet - widely planted in California but originally from Portugal. Today, award-winning winemaker Jamie Quendera has crafted a mighty, Reserva-quality red, from rare 100-year-old vines. And the unique twist? Jamie aged the wine for 12 months in custom double casks. The top and bottom are French oak (imparting subtle spice) while the long side planks are American (for vanilla notes). The result is an ultra-smooth, cherry-ripe, well-spiced drop!

Valdepeñas in central Spain has long been renowned for the quality of its fine, long-aged, traditional reds. Even then, Raices 2017 is a stand out – a Gran Reserva Tempranillo aged 18 months in French and American oak barrels, now deliciously mellow.

For five generations, the Castro family have been making exceptional red wines in the heart of Valdepeñas, central Spain. Their extensive vineyards lie at altitudes in excess of 700 metres, planted on poor, infertile soils and blessed with plenty of sunshine (2,500 hours a year). All ideal conditions for the production of great wine, with good colour and intensity. They pride themselves on their traditional methods, using here all Tempranillo, hand-harvested, fermented slowly, then aged at least 18 months in French and American oak barrels. The former lends subtle spice notes, while the latter offers more obvious coconut flavours. With 7 years age, it shows mellow red fruits, spice and oaky complexity. Great with tapas or grilled meats.
