And as we’re in the Barossa, let’s start with Shiraz! 5 Red Star-rated Angove is one of Australia's oldest family owned wineries, founded in 1886, with access to some of the finest fruit across 'big red' regions. Their Gold-winning Limited Release 4255 is rich and velvety with savoury earthy tones and chocolatey hints, made using fruit from blocks in the Stockwell area to the north of the Barossa region, Bethany in the south and Angaston to the east. Barossa Valley Cabernet is also a force to be reckoned with, and Gold-winning The Pastor’s Son Cabernet boasts generous lashings of rich dark blackcurrant, forest fruits, elegant herbs and spice, and comes from another of the region’s best, 5 Red Star-rated producers… Peter Lehmann was indeed a Pastor’s Son, a fifth-generation Barossa winemaker, a member of the Order of Australia, called “a legend in his own lifetime” (Halliday) and “the most famous man in the Australian wine business” (Matthew Jukes). Back in the 1970’s, he championed small independent grape growers, through days when the big wineries reneged on their contracts. He never lost their loyalty, and it earned him the title ‘Baron of the Barossa’.

Right now, in Australia there’s a sizeable upswing in the popularity of Grenache – and the Barossa Valley, has many outstanding releases leading this Grenache charge. Patronus ‘The Antler‘, made by winemaker Andréa Maxwell, is juicy, appealing, boasts Gold and 90pts, and makes a lovely partner to roast pork, spicy pork belly, but but great too sipped on its own.
