Beyond the Labels
The fine wines surrounding your new Dartington Crystal Decanter are sure to amaze – from the Gold-medal Château Le Coin Bordeaux to the very special Barón de Barbón '20th Anniversary' Rioja and so much more.
Leconfield is a “distinguished estate with a proud history” (Halliday). In 1974, Sydney Hamilton, who already had enjoyed a celebrated winemaking career, bought land in Coonawarra in order to produce classic Coonawarra Cabernet on the famed terra rossa soils here. He named his estate after an ancestor of his from England, Lord Leconfield, and did indeed build a huge reputation not only for his Cabernet Sauvignon, but Cabernet Franc and Merlot too.
This outstanding 2021 release has won a Trophy, Gold and scores of 95 and 92. It's a delight.
"Deep and bright red-purple colour, with a bouquet of humus and tobacco, a hint of green-olive, the palate full of sweet, ripe and quite luscious fruit, beautifully framed by fine tannins and impeccably balanced. Long carry; high cellaring potential. A cracking Merlot and great value for money" (Huon Hooke, The Real Review).
The supple, ripe Barón de Barbón has remained our bestselling Rioja since the early 2000s. That’s decades of popularity and loyal customers coming back for more. Our friendship with the Murúa family goes back even further, so much so that Javier Murúa – the talent behind this contemporary, fruit-driven red – calls us up after the vintage so we can get the first pick on their finest vats. Together we thought this close bond and 20 years of bestselling Barón de Barbón was a worthy cause for celebration. Javier crafted this celebratory edition from special parcels of old-vine Tempranillo. Cask-aged in American oak for 8 months, this red is supple and full of character. Juicy berries and plum with light vanilla and oak spice. Celebrate 20 years of friendship with this Rioja. Great solo or with food.
The Pike brothers established Pikes winery in the Polish Hill sub-region of the Clare Valley in 1984, renovating an old stone shearing shed to house their winery and cellar door. Neil is the veteran winemaker (he’s done over 38 vintages in Clare); Andrew the seasoned viticulturist (he spent 22 years working for big names like Wynn’s Coonawarra and Southcorp before establishing Pikes). Together they turn out formidable wines that earn plenty of show medals and critical acclaim. Their richly textured 2021 'Wilfred's Block' really is magnificent. A definitive Australian blend of inky, slatey Cabernet and sumptuous, spicy Shiraz, it’s a contemplative wine – the layers of flavour will reveal themselves slowly – and perfect for winter sipping. It will cellar well until 2029, but is drinking beautifully now. Decant, pour into big glasses, and savour with good food and good friends.
The noise surrounding Bordeaux is usually focused on the unreachable first growths. But, if you know where to look, there are bargains to be found. After 50 years of practice, our talent lies in sniffing out great-value, quality wines. Ludovic Roussillon’s Château Le Coin is the perfect example. Thanks to the strict, historic appellation boundaries, Ludovic’s estate shares the same fine, Saint-Emilion limestone soil, but falls just outside the official boundary, on the other side of the river. Meaning top-shelf liquid but without the pain of the price. He’s a one-man-band, growing his own grapes and making his own wine, so you’ll never see him out of his blue overalls. His efforts pay off, winning countless Golds for his silky, rich claret. Aromas of ripe plum with notes of tobacco and spice, while the palate is smooth and silky with ripe damson, cassis, and hints of spicy oak.
A gift from the leading name in English glassware...
Wine Summary
Most young wines benefit from decanting 30 minutes before serving, allowing aromas and flavours to unfurl. Pour mature wines slowly into a decanter and gently rotate the bottle at the end to catch any sediment in the shoulder of the bottle.
Making this juicy yet savoury red blend came down to splitting hairs, as the winemakers at Zonte's Footstep tweaked the proportions of the blend in tiny one percent increments until the perfect balance was achieved. Through this meticulous process they discovered the exact point at which the juicy, fragrant Grenache (35%) just tames the savoury chewiness of the Tempranillo (65%). Matured in a combination of new and seasoned French and American oak barrels for up to 12 months. An aromatic nose of sweet raspberry and blue fruit with a lifted red floral perfume and whirls of jasmine and lavender. The palate is ripe and savoury with a melange of blueberry, plums and red currants leading the way with plenty of secondary threads following behind in the form of dried cranberry, pomegranate molasses and dark chocolate, along with an earthy, crushed wet gravel note. Deliciously drying Dutch-cocoa tannins. "Smooth and comfortingly delicious, the wine shows dark berry, assorted nut, clove and game notes on the nose. The palate displays gorgeously rounded mouthfeel and rich texture, wonderfully complemented by juicy fruit intensity and spicy nuances... 93pts" (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
In a region famous for both its azure-lined Adriatic coast and snow-capped mountains, Abruzzo, you'll find the inspiring young winemaker, Ludo to her friends. You'll usually see her on her bike, pedalling the hills between vineyards, waving 'cia' - hello and goodbye – to those she passes. This is her homeland, so she knows it well, loves it, too. Trebbiano is her (and Abruzzo's) white grape of choice, making vibrant, lemon and lime-fresh white. For reds, her passion is the Abruzzo hero Montepulciano – that bright, plum-filled, all velvety-supple character, the reds of which are deliciously moreish, especially in the able hands of Ludo. A great all-round red. In summer, try it lightly chilled. Raise a glass, remember her name. Cia' Ludo!
