Three Grenache-rich beauties from southern France meet three popular Garnachas from Spain and include a truly regal star of the Rhône, and the juicy Artiga Garnacha, both two-time Gold winners. Save $108 on the dozen at $18.49 a bottle. Please note: UNLIMITED members pay $17.49 a bottle.
A smooth, richly spiced, black red – our most reordered French red ever and with a history of umpteen Golds. From deep in southern France, Cabalié needs no ceremony. Just large glasses for serving! Its secret? It’s crafted by a master winemaker, Hervé Sabardeil, following the centuries-old style beloved of Roman centurions, who first made wine there. Raspberry-rich Grenache, with herby black-fruit Syrah and Carignan, Cabalié has impressive concentration. That’s due to the maturity of the vines, most well over 50 years old. The tiny berries they produce give Cabalié extraordinarily rich, ripe flavours. Boasting 8 Golds in as many vintages, this much-loved red is warming solo or with hearty dishes.
One of our top-selling Rhône reds, this gorgeous, velvety wine offers tremendous value. It’s from the only co-operative cellar in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and is owned and run by local growers. The reason it’s not labelled Châteauneuf (and is not twice the price!) is that the grapes are from vineyards next door to the famed appellation. What they do share is the same rock-strewn soil that promotes superb richness and ripeness – and vines that are similarly aged and gnarled, which results in tiny quantities of concentrated fruit. Created by the gifted Thierry Ferlay, it’s brimming with juicy red berries, black pepper spice, and rounded tannins. A real gem on its own, or spot-on with rack of lamb, a robust cassoulet or grilled stuffed peppers.
Big Red El Bombero has been a top choice with customers for over 20 years. And in special vintages, winemaker Javier Domeque crafts a sophisticated Gran Reserva version using the pick of the crop from his oldest vines. To qualify for Gran Reserva status, the wine is aged in oak for three years with further time in bottle prior to release. It’s made mostly from Garnacha, an important component of many full-bodied Spanish reds (and also of Châteauneuf-du-Pape), with a generous portion of juicy Tempranillo for added flavour. It's a touch more refined than El Bombero itself, but still full of rich berry flavour and with delicious spicy complexity from American oak. Drinking perfectly right now with roast lamb, game or a selection of tapas.
It’s back, and better than ever! We’ve been holding onto the sweet memory of this juicy, dark Spanish Garnacha for years. Back in the 1990s it was one of Tony Laithwaite’s favourite wines, and our customers loved it too. Today it’s made by Bodegas Raíces Ibérica, which was set up by Mark Schiettekat in 2020. Starting up as a local wine merchant (from his garage) in Aragón in the 1990s, Mark has come a long way and has been impressing the critics as he goes. Master of Wine Jancis Robinson listed the bodega as one of Spain’s “exciting newcomers”. Winemaker Rubén Magallanes, a Garnacha fanatic, uses high-altitude, old-vine fruit, to ensure a freshness to the flavour-filled, sweetly spiced red. Juicy red fruits, notes of cocoa powder, spices and balsamic. It's a warming glass solo or with hearty dishes.
In 2017, this winery was awarded the coveted title of Best Winery in Aragón, by the Academia Aragonesa de Gastronomía. Deep, rich purplish tones with intense aromas of ripe red berries and a rich peppery spiciness on the nose, which is one of the standout characteristics of Campo de Borja’s best Garnacha wines. Silky-smooth in the mouth with a long-lasting and pleasant aftertaste. The perfect match for richly flavoured meats, roast veg and mature cheeses. Also great with traditional Spanish fare, such as pata negra cured serrano ham or spicy chorizo sausage.
