Beyond the Labels
We know the region inside out – smaller, family estates as well as the famous names – and we make wine ourselves here too. So you get to enjoy outstanding red Bordeaux without having to spend a fortune. Ludovic Roussillon’s Château Le Coin is the perfect example. Thanks to the strict, historic appellation boundaries, Ludovic’s estate shares the same fine, Saint-Emilion limestone soil, but falls just outside the official boundary, on the other side of the river. Meaning top-shelf liquid but without the pain of the price. And it wins Golds every year! Ludovic is the man behind Gold-winning Moulin du Prieur too.
Mostly Merlot, with a little Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon it’s fruit-forward with sleek tannins. Comte Desclos is a two-time Gold winner from Jean-Marc Sauboua, who also makes Le Bourg. Jean-Marc trained at one of Bordeaux’s smartest addresses – first growth Château Haut-Brion – but for Le Bourg he wanted to produce a red as easy to drink by the glass, as it is with a fine supper. He chose two parcels of mostly Merlot – a Right Bank cuvée from the ripe 2022 vintage, the other from just across the river and the fresher 2021 vintage. A touch of oak, and his objective is achieved perfectly. Enjoy two bottles of each in the dozen and SAVE $108.
Ludovic Roussillon is one of the top viticulteurs in Bordeaux’s Entre-Deux-Mers. He knows how to coax the very best out of his soils to get the most flavour in his grapes. Work hard in the vineyard and the wine almost makes itself, he says. We’ve worked with Ludovic for a number of years, enjoying both his red and his white from Château Le Coin. This is another wine from his vineyards – mostly Merlot, with a little Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon – all vinified to bring out the plum and cassis fruit richness, supported by sleek tannins. Rethink Bordeaux with this supple, generously fruity, rounded red. It’s already drinking really well, with or without food. Roast beef, full flavoured pasta dishes, charcuterie, cheese – this wine is very versatile.
The noise surrounding Bordeaux is usually focused on the unreachable first growths. But, if you know where to look, there are bargains to be found. After 50 years of practice, our talent lies in sniffing out great-value, quality wines. He’s a one-man-band, growing his own grapes and making his own wine, so you’ll never see him out of his blue overalls. His efforts pay off, winning countless Golds for his silky, rich claret. Aromas of ripe plum with notes of tobacco and spice, while the palate is smooth and silky with ripe damson, cassis, and hints of spicy oak.
Rewind 25 years and nearly every wine merchant offered a good, ordinary claret perfect for lunchtime sipping. Well, Comte Desclos is a revival of that style. Unpretentious and uncomplicated, with lots of appealing fruit, good structure, but no hard edges. Our Bordeaux buyer has taken full advantage of his network of Bordeaux contacts to put this together. He tasted cuvées from the length and breadth of the region, all from the exceptional 2020 vintage. Then using winemaking skills perfected at top estates in Bordeaux and Rioja, he blended this cracking red Bordeaux, which has picked up two Golds already. It’s made mostly from Merlot, so it has soft plum and redcurrant flavour, a touch of oak and enough richness to go with all kinds of dishes.
