Durif Top Four Favourites Dozen
Relish the delights of mighty Durif! in a top-quality quartet of our Top 4 bestsellers. All have enviable medal-winning records – three of which boast Gold, one, 3 Golds and no fewer than SIX Show Trophies – and, remarkably, at just $15.49 a bottle.
There’s also a fun and surprising back story to Durif, because, curiously, for Aussie bestsellers The Black Stump, Dark Corner, The Black Duck, and Johnny Q’s Carpone – you have two guys named Francois to thank! The grape was discovered In the 1870s, Frenchman Dr. François Durif, who modestly named the new grape after himself – then was disappointed that it failed to catch on in his homeland, where it all but disappeared. Then, François de Castella, the Melbourne-born son of a Swiss wine grower, brought phylloxera-resistant Durif vines to South Eastern Australia in 1908 to help bolster the then vulnerable Aussie wine industry. The vines loved the drier climate here and thrived.
It's become the grape behind many of our most popular Aussie reds – both in pure form and fabulous blends – and we're sure if you don't already, you're going to love these!
