Kilikanoon Baroota Reserve has long been a favourite and this 2020 vintage impresses with a Gold, Double Gold and high scores. • Ermita de San Lorenzo is a multi-Gold winning combo of old vine Grenache (vines planted in 1958 – 68 years ago!) and Cabernet from Spain. Mellow, complex, with spicy red fruit and cassis – and endless charm. It's delivered a Trophy and 21 Golds (5 of them Doubles).in 7 vintages • Stones and Bones, with a dozen Golds in 10 vintages, comes from Casa Santos Lima, an estate that's won major awards including ‘Best Producer of Portugal’, and has vineyards ringed by ancient boulders and dinosaur fossils – hence the name. Syrah and local grapes Tinta Roriz and Alicante here make for a luscious, juicy drop I love at barbecues. • RedHeads Vin’atus, a blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Grenache, might be old-world inspired but it’s packed with Aussie Pizzazz. Another Gold winner, it’s packed with spiced plum, dark berries and savoury spice, dark chocolate and vanilla hints with silky tannins. I loved it with a Chorizo-based paella. • Langhorne Creek produces the best Malbec in Australia, and 90pt Vashon Estate, is varietally ‘en point’ – all succulent blue and black fruits – and, characteristically for the region – superb value! • In Australia Grenache is enjoying a revival right now – and the estate that’s leading the charge is Thistledown. In the 2026 Halliday Wine Awards Thistledown picked up THREE Trophies – including Best Wine of the Year – for yes, a Grenache. At the McLaren Vale Wine Show, earlier this year, the estate bagged FOUR Trophies, including Wine of Show (again for a Grenache) PLUS the title of Bushing Monarch.
