Let’s start in Bella Italia… The picturesque Valpolicella Classico region (home to world-famous classic Amarone) lies just north of the beautiful city of Verona, and is home to two-time Gold-winning, Bartolomeo Lorenzi Rosso Veronese. This super-impressive red, made with a dash of Amarone, is all juicy, fresh dark cherry and mocha tastiness – and made by Amarone specialist Cantina di Negrar, Italy’s 2019 Winery of the Year. France’s Willem the Silent is a delicious Rhône red brimful of savoury-edged black fruit, herbs and spice. It’s made by Châteauneuf-du-Pape winemaker, Thierry Ferlay, in a region that flies under the radar. Vaucluse lies between Provence and big southern Rhône names like Rasteau, Gigondas and Chateauneuf-du-Pape itself. With any of these names on a label and its price would rise dramatically. Head south to Spain for mighty six-time Gold-winning BACCO Garnacha (Grenache). It’s a silky mature star from the old bush vines of Spain's Campo de Borja, known as “The Empire of Garnacha” because the grape’s so well adapted to local conditions, and can claim to be the rightful home of this international superstar variety. Star of the show – beating even this six-time Gold-winning beauty – is Australia’s delicious combo of Shiraz, Durif and Grenache from Sam Trimboli – which has scooped Top Gold, 96pts and a TOP Trophy.
